"Ok... now you try."
"One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest." ~ Maya Angelou
Kim Brown (eRYT-200 and Owner of Sama) started practicing yoga as a method of cross-training while traveling as a Technology Consultant in the mid-1990’s. She was looking for a gentle but challenging exercise after injuring her shoulders from 17 intense years of competitive swimming. She studied books and DVDs for 10 years before finally getting the courage to step into a studio… and change her life.
Kim entered her first class as awkward as a duck learning to waddle. She was over 200 pounds, pre-diabetic with high cholesterol, going through a separation, changing jobs at work, and suffering from post-partem depression. After two months of classes (two or three times a week) she realized how much yoga was helping her overcome her anxiety and panic attacks. After a year she was off all medications, dropped over 70 pounds, meditating daily, practicing Ayurveda, and ready to learn more!
Through college Kim focused on the psychology of sport as well as the science of athletic training. Kim's love of anatomy and injury assessment (plus personal experience) gave her a solid background with therapy and prevention.
Kim is certified in Vinyasa and Anusara Inspired Hatha Yoga at the 200 hour level, children's and prenatal yoga, and has over 10,000 hours of teaching experience. She is currently pursuing her 500 hour Hatha Teaching Certification and has been a part of multiple 200 hour teacher training's at different studio's in the area. In April of 2017, Kim will kick off her first 200 hour Teacher Training at Sama.
Kim began teaching children in 2007 as a form of play and connection. After corporate lay-offs n 2011 she decided to pursue teaching full time at multiple studios in the North-West Suburbs, Coaching Holistic Health and Nutrition clients, and volunteering at schools teaching meditation and yoga to children and young adults. Kim's teaching style is a playful, interactive, and challenging blend of inspiration, anatomy, motivation, and humor. She is inspired on a daily basis by the transformation of students in class. Come in, learn to let go of your worries, and play with Kim.
Besides operating and teaching at Sama... Kim is a Certified Holistic Health Coach, Reiki Master Teacher, Essential Oil Practitioner, BioMat Junkie, USA Swimming Official and a single Mom to an amazing 12 year old daughter, 2 large daredevil cats, and a 100 pound puppy.
